MA, FF

FF: Documents:

-          “Clean” water supply conflicts in Guadalajara and Jalisco. A summary of the last decade of public policy and social conflict in Jalisco, México.

-          Abstract of the book about the Arcediano Project, coord. by FF and Bravo Padilla

-          Summary and conclusions about literature review on resilience, as concept.

-          Future reading of the Resilience Alliance methodology.

MA:

1.       To use and rescue the experience and data about the referred cases.

2.       To explore the possibility of using the FF model for decision making in water supply projects as a starting point for the research.

MA & FF:

1.       Research might focus on just in Mexico, so a more deep analysis could be made.

2.       Resilience paradigm could be used to understand the current institutional arrangement (that includes corruption) as resilient to environmental public policy.

MA, RR,

FF

FF: -     Research timeline (ver. 7sep10).

-          1st. questionnaire for the Research Management Unit.

-          Summary of reviewed articles about: corruption and environment; corruption as a kind of institutional arrangement; the resource curse theory.

MA:

1. Suggestion for the timeline: a) definition of cases before the seminar; b) to research first about the institutional framework of the selected countries and then the specific literature review; c) to put more emphasis on the institutional framework and summarize the existent FF’s experience about Mexican dams.

2. To consider that being 2 research lines (corruption and vulnerability), one could eventually be sacrificed.

RR:

1. Suggestion of reviewing the Porter’s curse model. As well qualitative methods, like factor analysis.

2. To consider as a reference for the proposal: a) for who and what for the research could be useful; b) how it will be useful in the next FF professional stage; c) which policy proposals could be derived from the research.

MA & RR: Different options about the number of cases or countries.

Supervision meetings summary.

Abstract of the FF’s book about the Arcediano dam.

MA, RR,

FF

FF: - Hydroelectric projects as the field of study

-          Mexican hydroelectric strategy and affected population.

-          McNally et. al.’s research about China’s dams. Where they use the concepts resilience vs. vulnerability instead of sustainability. Also powershed, as the influence area of a dam.

RR: Article about corruption and the environmental Kuznets curve.

RR & MA: Discussion about social capital, whether could be used or applied.

It was emphasized the challenge of talking about corruption. Also the importance of defining a methodology.

RR: Suggestion of considering that the phenomenon of corruption and similar problems occur as well in any developing country, not only in LA.

Advice about the initial time dedication to the research.

MA: To consider the thesis by publication option

FF: General idea about the research

-          LA environment policies at national scale. Stakeholders, outcomes, emblematic projects, conflict, forgotten areas.

-          Conflictive projects and impacts for vulnerable groups and ecosystems.

MA: Definitions to be made:

1. From which science perspective? Economy, Sociology, Anthropology, etc.

2. What kind of environmental policies? Dams and touristic projects in wetlands as options.

3. Quantitative, qualitative o mixed methodology?
